DBT is a multimodal treatment with skills training groups as the most popular component. As DBT becomes increasingly ubiquitous and effective for a broader range of diagnoses, it is important that clinicians stay relevant by having a basic knowledge of DBT. This workshop will provide a brief overview on the background of DBT as a cognitive behavioral treatment, balancing acceptance and change, and addressing five different areas of dysregulation (self, emotional, cognitive, interpersonal, behavioral). We will teach each of the four core content areas (mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance) by outlining the goals of each section, explaining the set of skills/interventions that fit with each goal, and then demonstrating teaching techniques for some of the most commonly utilized skills. Participants will experientially learn strategies for observing and describing (mindfulness), participation (mindfulness), DEAR MAN (interpersonal effectiveness), distractions (distress tolerance), and opposite action (emotion regulation).

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the structure and purpose of DBT skills training groups.
  • List each of the four DBT skills modules and their associated goals
  • Utilize effective teaching methods for mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance in individual sessions with clients.
