Emotion Regulation (ER) is one of the four primary skill areas of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Difficulty regulating emotions is at the root of many clients’ experiences of distress and problematic patterns. DBT ER skills teach clients basic knowledge of how emotions can function in ways that are helpful, healthy, and understandable (a foreign concept to many clients who grew up with dysregulated family systems or other traumatic childhood experiences). Then using that emotional awareness, teach skills to help clients assess whether their emotion fits a situation, effectively change various emotions (increase or decrease), decrease emotional vulnerability/increase resilience, and utilize steps for letting go of “stuck” emotions.

This workshop will review the goals for the DBT emotion regulation module and then teach each of the ER skills. Drs. Edwards and Santorelli will use case examples from DBT groups as well as individual therapy cases to illustrate how skills are taught to clients, how clients utilize skills to regulate emotions in a variety of situations, common barriers to practicing skills, and tips for teaching each skill most effectively or troubleshooting difficulties.
